People & Lifestyle

Western Springs is known for friendly neighbors and a strong sense of community. Residents mostly commute by train or drive to other Chicagoland areas for work. The village’s businesses have a mix of classic and contemporary appeal as do the homes throughout town. Although Western Springs is smaller than neighboring towns (nestled between Hinsdale and La Grange), there are lots of options for entertainment and outdoor recreation.

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

There is a great selection of popular restaurants clustered close to the Western Springs train station. Davanti Enoteca is an Italian restaurant and wine bar with a rustic wood and stone interior plus an outdoor patio. Hillgrove Tap is a hip contemporary tavern with flavorful pub grub and a wide selection of craft beer on draft. Celebrated restauranteur Paul Virant’s Vie offers farm-to-table fine dining, pairing elegant seasonal dishes with innovative cocktails. Kirschbaum’s Bakery has been a Western Springs mainstay since 1953 and is run by members of the same family that opened it. Menu items include tempting cakes, cookies, pastries, bread, and other baked goods.

Things to Do

Western Springs Water Tower has been a landmark of the village since the 1890s. As well as holding water, the tower originally served as the home of the Western Springs police department. This landmark now contains a museum with exhibits on the village’s history. Theatre of Western Springs is another cultural attraction that has been a part of the community since the 1920s. The theater has two stages with a variety of productions aimed at adults and children.

The Village of Western Springs French Market runs from May through October, with vendors selling local produce and artisanal foodstuffs each Sunday morning in the downtown area. Annual events include the summertime Gathering on the Green. This family-friendly celebration has many children’s activities, food and drink vendors, and live entertainment.

Western Springs has a dozen public parks, including the 40+ acre Spring Rock Park. Spring Rock Park has a variety of towering mature trees and many sports courts and playing fields. Go Ape offers outdoor adventure courses in Bemis Woods suited for both beginners and adrenaline seekers. Just down the street from Bemis Woods in neighboring Brookfield is the Brookfield Zoo.  With over 450 species of animals and over 200 acres of land it is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike.

In addition to exploring the outdoors, there are many classes and activities at Western Springs Recreation Center and Grand Avenue Community Center and the Western Springs Service Club operates an outdoor community swimming pool with swimming classes, swim teams, and water polo.

Schools

Western Springs is primarily served by public schools. The original neighborhoods comprising Western Springs are served by Western Springs School District 101 (3 elementary schools and 1 middle school) while LaGrange Highlands School District 106 serves newer neighborhoods (1 elementary school and 1 middle school). St. John of the Cross also offers a Catholic school option from pre-K through 8th grade. All elementary and middle schools in Western Springs feed into Lyons Township High School District 204.
